Do your athletes still get advice to soak a sprained ankle in a bucket of hot water and epsom salts?
That's what happened here, but we survived it. If you can exudate the substrate out of the ankle mortise with good acute care and early minimal weight bearing exercise, the injury should look something like this. Aquatic therapy is particularly useful because of the hydrostatic pressure and weightless environment, so if you have access to a pool use it! With the tape job described in a previous post, this athlete is already ambulating without an antalgic gait! Ahhhh youth.

Yes echymosis coming out is prob a good sign. Instead of ice packs we try to get our players to put it in the dreaded ice bucket with compression wrap. In between that Gameready and elevation. The players swear by the Gameready but sometimes good ol compression/elevation is the trick....
I've heard good things about the Game Ready/JOBST type devices in the A.T. room. Unfortunately that stuff always gets cut from my budget! HOWEVER...I do have that SpiderTech kinesiotape. Claims to reduce edema. But honestly, is the tape going to do a better job than what you see in the picture?
You're joking about the spider tape, right? I may not be an old timer like you but a good ol horseshoe and ACE bandage can do wonders...!
I agree with both of you - a good old horseshoe & compression wrap works well if you're on a low budget.
I've also had experience with the Gameready Unit and it is excellent for reducing acute joint swelling -however.... it does cost big bucks.
No kiddng Brian; got a few boxes from a neighborhood chiro that swears by it; haven't used it yet. But being a dumb pollock, I don't understand "lymphatic drainage"- I have to be able to see it and measure it with my own eyes.
Yeah, the old horseshoe felt pad and a compression rap is tough to improve on!
JOe,
I also use lymphatic massage to help reduce swelling and ecchymosis. Very effeective if you have 3-5 minutes to devote to it.
Good to hear from you JH.
Yeah, I use Graston to do the job, but you are correct- visible, MEASUREABLE results.
I think the Sports Tape can be used as very good equipment in injuries who are sports person and are in pain. I visit your website often and share with my friend.
